Ron Wyden’s third bid
for the U.S. Senate may prove to be tougher than he would have
anticipated. In a recent poll, virtually unknown Republican law
professor Jim Huffman performs better in a head to head ballot
test against two-term incumbent Ron Wyden than Jeff Merkley did
in his challenge to Senator Gordon Smith at a similar point in
2008.
The poll, conducted by Rasmussen on February 16, 2010 (N=500 likely
voters) shows Wyden with 49%, while Huffman gets 35% and another
16% have no candidate preference in this contest today. Huffman’s
standing against Wyden is impressive given his significant name
ID disadvantage. By contrast, in January 2008, Smith led Merkley
46% to 20%.
Wyden has not faced serious opposition in his last two contests,
but given the current political climate and unrest among the electorate,
2010 just might be the year the Senator gets a run for his money.
2010 U.S. Senate Race

The survey was conducted February 20-21,
2010 among a representative sample of 500 registered voters statewide.
The potential sampling error is +/-4% at the 95% confidence level.
