Washington Voters and Energy Issues
July 22, 2008

Voters Favor Two Out of Three Potential Energy Solutions
In light of the national debate over how best to control energy prices – from gasoline to heating fuels – we asked Washington voters to weigh in on three potential solutions: increased refining capacity, nuclear energy and increased offshore drilling. Of the three options, the most popular was building a new oil refinery in Washington (64% favor, 29% oppose), followed by building a nuclear power plant in Washington to generate electricity (59% favor, 33% oppose). At the same time, voters are statistically divided over the option of drilling for oil and gas off the coast of Washington (49% favor, 44% oppose).

“Here is a list of proposals addressing energy issues.
Please tell me if you favor or oppose each.”

Building an Oil Refinery: Key Subgroups
There is widespread support for building a new oil refinery in Washington except in Seattle, among Democrats age 18-54 and self-described Liberals.

Building a Nuclear Power Plant: Key Subgroups

A majority of Washington voters favor building a nuclear power plant in the state to generate electricity. More likely to be positive about a nuclear plant are Eastern Washington residents, men, Republicans and Conservatives. At the same time, opposition is found in Seattle and among Liberals.

Drilling for Oil and Gas Off the Washington Coast: Key Subgroups
Subgroup reactions to drilling off the Washington coast are the most varied of the three energy options. There is majority support outside the Central Puget Sound region, among men, voters age 65+, Republicans and Conservatives. However, there is wide opposition in Seattle, and among Democrats and Liberals.
